Some information about Cattle
The bovine (Bos primigenius taurus), also called domestic cattle, is an even-toed ungulate of the genus Bos of the family Bovidae. The cow is the domesticated descendant of the aurochs (Bos primigenius), which have been extinct since the Middle Ages.
The scientific name of the domesticated bovine was published as Bos taurus in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus. However, many other authors do not regard the bovine as a separate species but as a domesticated subspecies of the aurochs. That notion has now become commonplace. According to ICZN Opinion 2027, the species name is Bos primigenius.
The Indian cow has a typical hump and floppy ears. It is no longer considered a subspecies today, but the indicus variety of Bos primigenius taurus. A female bovine is called a cow, the male bovine a bull. An ox is a castrated bull.
The cow has a total of 32 teeth. In the upper jaw it has no canines and incisors, but it does have 6 premolars and 6 molars. In the lower jaw, the cow has 8 incisors, 6 premolars and 6 molars.
Domestication
Cattle have been kept as pets by humans for a long time. According to genetic research, cattle were probably domesticated in the Near East about 10,500 years ago from a small population of about 80 individuals.
The domestication of the aurochs into domestic cattle poses scientific problems due to the short time span in combination with the size of the aurochs (about 8 times heavier than a large bull): Julius Caesar described the aurochs as a "small elephant" and this is confirmed by the dimensions of the bones. Domestication requires a breeding program to select domestic animals, but with Neolithic technology it is unlikely to even confine an aurochs within a corral, let alone mate two chosen animals. It is suspected that an external cause has caused the sudden appearance of large numbers of dwarf specimens, which could have been captured by humans.
Due to the long domestication, many varieties, often regionally specific, have arisen. Some are more focused on milk production, others more on meat production and others on their ornamental value. Some are old varieties, of which few copies exist. Today, efforts are being made to preserve these ancient breeds. This is partly for cultural-historical reasons, partly to preserve genetic diversity.
Cattle farming
Cattle farming is one of the most important sources of not only meat, but also milk and leather for humans. Extreme breeding for milk yield has resulted in a continuous decline in the genetic diversity of the livestock. Good bulls sire many thousands of offspring through artificial insemination.
